Security Funding for Schools
In our day to day lives we worry about a lot of things. We work to balance time, budgets, family, and friends. Some of us worry about food, diet, health, and so on. That is by no means an exhaustive list. The issues that most often tops these lists is security. Is our home safe? Our business? Our family? We think about these things constantly. A worry that goes hand in hand with security — how to pay for it.
Few entities know more about this particular worry (the need for security vs. how to pay for it) than school districts.
I talk to school officials every week, all over Texas. Every official I speak with mentions issues with their security. Some have a system installed but it’s not functional. Some don’t have many security measures in place but know they need them. The overarching theme with security in these school districts is a serious lack of funding. Budgeted money goes to pay teachers, to fund school programs, to perform building updates, to increase technology in the school… I argue that it should be used to update building security.
In the past few years, the United States has seen an average of one school shooting every two weeks or so. That’s a frequency that should truly alarm school officials. School security is best done proactively, not after an incident occurs. Now, when we say security, we do not always mean a multi-million dollar access control system. Security can be as simple as a locked door. It can be education and training for the staff at the school. It can also encompass other technologies like video surveillance cameras, burglar alarms and fire alarms.
Funding for security has been continually cut the same way other budgetary items like technology and staff payroll have. These widespread budget cuts have led us to look for alternative sources of funding.
The good news: funding options are available to qualified applicants from several different sources.
Several grants can be found online. Searching for these grants can be done easily by visiting www.grants.gov. The Department of Homeland Security also has several grant options that can be found at www.dhs.gov. These are just on a federal level. There are also several grants available in each state. As of last year, there was over $300 million dollars available to school from Texas’ Homeland Security Program.
When it comes to school security, there’s simply too much at stake to let funding be a barrier to safety.
