AT&T 2G Sunset and Your Alarm System
In late 2012, AT&T Inc. announced their plan to shut down their 2G wireless network. The shutdown of the 2G network will not happen all at once. Instead, the service will be removed incrementally and will be gone completely by January 1, 2017.
AT&T is shutting down the 2G wireless network to increase the capacity on their 3G and 4G networks.
How does this affect my alarm system?
Enter the GSM. The GSM is the device that allows your security system to communicate with the monitoring center over the cellular network. Over the years, these devices have developed to be compatible with 2G, 3G, and now 4G networks. However, hundreds of our customers have a GSM device that’s only compatible with the 2G network. Once that network is gone, those devices will not be able to send or receive signals.
So what should I do?
We have a list of our customers whose GSMs operate on the 2G network, and are working toward contacting each of these customers. Each of these customers will receive a free GSM upgrade to ensure their home security systems continues to function properly.
