Security Advancements and the Decline of Criminal Activity
Sometimes it feels like our world is more hostile and dangerous than ever before.
Our world is blasted with a 24 hour news cycle that reports just about any and all bad news, including journalists who abide by the “if it bleeds, it leads” phrase coined for news story success.
However, according to Secretary of State John Kerry and television host John Stossel, the world may actually be safer than it has ever been.
Stossel noted in his blog that U.S. murder and robbery occurrences have gone down by more than half, and sexual crimes, such as rape, by a third in the last 20 years.
While the increase in world safety cannot be traced back to one specific reason, it can thank the advancement of technology as a major factor in making the world safer.
As an integrated security professional for 10 years, I have seen firsthand the growth of access control, closed circuit television, and intrusion detection systems in not only corporate and the government sectors, but also in urban and rural school districts, small businesses, and homes. With the increase of individuals owning security devices, decreasing criminal activity will naturally follow suit.
Even better, security has become user accessible. System owners can now monitor their property from a personal tablet or phone. It is as easy as using the Weather Channel app! As access control systems become easier to use and more affordable, adding systems to homes and businesses is becoming the standard.
Despite the bad news, all 24 hours of it, there is good news! With Ener-Tel’s commitment to advancing technology and security, we are making the world safe — for you and your family.
